BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana’s weeklong early voting period for the Dec. 11 election begins Saturday in the 38 parishes that have local competitions on the ballot.

Ascension, Bossier, Catahoula, East Baton Rouge, Iberia, Orleans, Rapides and Vernon Parishes have candidates vying for elected jobs, with voters in New Orleans choosing their sheriff, clerk of criminal district court and several city council members. The candidate races are runoffs featuring the top two vote-getters from the Nov. 13 election.

There are local propositions, such as tax and bond issues to finance schools and libraries, on ballots across 34 parishes, according to the secretary of state’s office. St. Tammany Parish voters will decide whether to authorize a casino to relocate in the parish. In Ouachita Parish, some voters will determine if they want to recall the mayor of Richwood.

Early voting runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Saturday through Dec. 4, except Sunday. Details about early voting locations can be obtained through the secretary of state’s website at geauxvote.com, the state’s GeauxVote mobile app or by phone at 1-800-883-2805.

The primary and runoff elections were postponed five weeks because of Hurricane Ida, and the storm’s destruction has forced some changes in voting locations.
